Emotional Intelligence Starts with Awareness

As a leadership coach, I work with leaders of all levels to help them develop emotional intelligence. One of the most important aspects of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Self-awareness is the ability to understand your own emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. It is essential for leaders because it allows them to make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and create a more positive work environment.

There are many benefits to being self-aware as a leader. For example, self-aware leaders are better able to manage their own emotions. This means that they are less likely to let their emotions get the best of them in difficult situations. They are also better able to recognize and respond to the emotions of others. This can help them build stronger relationships with their team members and create a more positive work environment.

In addition, self-aware leaders can better identify their strengths and weaknesses. This allows them to delegate tasks more effectively and to focus on their areas of expertise. It also helps them to develop their weaknesses and to become more well-rounded leaders.

Self-aware leaders are more likely to be successful in their careers. A study by the Hay Group found that self-aware leaders are 70% more likely to be promoted than those who are not self-aware (Source: Hay Group. (2012). The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations. Boston, MA: Harvard Business Review Press.). They are also more likely to be seen as effective leaders by their team members. This is not just perception, as 92% of leaders with high emotional intelligence had teams with high energy and high performance, per the Korn Ferry Hay Group. Thus if you want to be a more effective leader and move up in your industry, it is important to develop your self-awareness.

There are many things you can do to improve your self-awareness. Here are a few examples:

  • Pay attention to your emotions. Notice how you feel in different situations and try to identify the triggers that cause you to feel certain emotions.

  • Reflect on your thoughts and behaviors. Think about why you do the things you do and how your emotions might be affecting your decisions.

  • Get feedback from others. Ask your team members, friends, and family for honest feedback about your strengths and weaknesses.

  • Seek professional help. If you are struggling to improve your self-awareness, consider working with a coach who can help you develop this important skill.

If you want to be a more successful leader, it is clear that you need to develop your self-awareness. Developing your self-awareness is an ongoing process, but it is one of the most important things you can do to become a more effective leader. By taking the time to understand yourself better, you can make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and create a more positive work environment.
